What is the surgical process?
Any surgery has four parts:
Physical check and blood test
Premedication and induction
Surgery
Recovery
Physical Check and Blood Test
A full physical examination is carried out just before all surgeries. Blood tests may be recommended if your pet is at a higher anaesthetic risk with the test allowing us to identify potential problems in organs . This will be discussed with you at the time of planning your surgery.
Premedication and Induction
There are many options for ensuring a smooth anaesthetic. Key is the choice of medication to help smooth the transition from awake to unconscious. Painkillers, antibiotics, and anxiety relieving medication tend to be given at this stage so they are working well before surgery actually starts.
The induction occurs under close supervision so we are able to control the airway and move to gaseous anaesthetics for the duration of surgery.
Surgery
Surgery can cover all types of procedures from routine neutering surgeries, to large lump removals or repairing fractures. Where we operate and what we will do will be discussed with you directly before any procedure takes place.
All surgeries can take a variable length of time and so we carefully monitor your pet and use gaseous anaesthetics to keep them comfortable and unconscious.
Recovery
We monitor all pets as they recover and ensure they are pain free and comforted until they are more familiar with their surroundings. We will not send any pet home until they are fully awake and we are happy with their post operation condition. Once recovered fully we offer food and water, something which is welcomed by most pets given they will have most likely missed breakfast!
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
We try to keep all our surgery cases as day patients. This means we aim to have your pet back in your care on the same day.
HOW MANY VISITS ARE REQUIRED
The follow up for surgery depends on the surgery undertaken.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Each surgery is tailored to your pet and so will vary depending on the surgery undertaken.
